What should I expect for my child’s First visit?

The exam is short and simple. We may ask you to sit in the dental chair with your child and hold your child if they are an infant or young toddler. For most younger children, this helps to provide them with security they need. For older children that can already talk, you may be asked to wait in the reception area for part of the visit so that a relationship of trust can be built between your child and dental staff.

What happens during my visit?

Depending on the child’s age, x-rays may be taken to help identify decay and to check on the progress of your child’s permanent teeth under the gums. We will then gently examine your child’s teeth and gums. A cleaning is then performed and if your child is eligible for dental sealants, your dentist will let you know. Lastly, an application of topical fluoride is left on the teeth to help strengthen them and protect them against decay.

When do adult teeth come in?

The first baby teeth that come into the mouth are the two bottom front teeth. You will notice this when your baby is about 6-8 months old. Next to follow will be the 4 upper front teeth and the remainder of your baby’s teeth will appear periodically. They will usually appear in pairs along the sides of the jaw until the child is about 2 1/2 years old. At around 2 1/2 years old your child should have all 20 teeth. Between the ages of 5 and 6 the first permanent teeth will begin to erupt. Some of the permanent teeth replace baby teeth and some don’t. Don’t worry if some teeth are a few months early or late as all children are different. Baby teeth are important as they not only hold space for permanent teeth but they are important to chewing, biting, speech and appearance. For this reason it is important to maintain a healthy diet and daily hygiene. In order to prepare your child for the first visit to the dentist, it may be a good idea to let your child know what is going to happen during their visit. Exposing them to videos and books about the topic of going to the dentist may help them to learn about and even enjoy their visit. Remember to speak positively of your own experiences with the dentist and encourage your little one in achieving great dental health!
