What are dentures?
Dentures are removable dental prosthetics designed to help people who are missing part or all of their teeth to regain function. Complete dentures and partial dentures can also help to restore your smile as well. Depending on your personal preferences and how healthy the remaining teeth are, there are a few options when it comes to denture fabrication.
What happens at my First denture appointment?
A conventional denture is made after all teeth have been extracted and the tissues (gums) have healed. A partial denture is made to fit over healthy natural teeth. Partial dentures are highly recommended when you have enough healthy lower teeth remaining since bottom complete dentures only sit on top of the remaining bone and do not suction like upper complete dentures do to the roof of the mouth. As a result, bottom complete dentures tend to move around more. Please consult with your dentist to see if this may be an option for you.
What are immediate dentures?
An immediate denture is fabricated and inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted and the tissues are allowed to heal under the denture. Typically, your back teeth are extracted first and are allowed to heal. When you return to have the remaining front teeth removed, the immediate denture is delivered at the same time. This helps the denture to have some stability while the front heals. This method helps to restore your lost dentition immediately. Immediate dentures are meant to be temporary since your gums will shrink over a period of up to a year after the extractions are completed. New complete dentures are recommended when the immediate dentures no longer provide a good fit. Immediate dentures are not meant to be the final denture.
What are denture teeth made from?
Denture teeth are made of either plastic or porcelain. Complete dentures may also be attached to dental implants to allow for a more secure fit, leading to a more satisfactory functional experience. There are many options with dentures, and it is a good idea to go in for a visit to discuss all the options available to you.
How long before I replace my dentures?
We recommend that dentures be replaced regularly. Over a normal course of time, dentures will wear and need to be replaced or relined in order to keep the jaw alignment normal. The alignment will slowly change as the bone and gum ridges recede or shrink due to the extraction of the teeth or as a result of normal denture use. Regular dental examinations are still important for the denture wearer so that the oral tissues can be checked for disease or change.
