What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin shells of ceramic that bond to the front surfaces of teeth. What is the process of getting veneers?
At your first visit, the doctor will consult with you and advise you of any limitations that there might be so that you have a realistic idea of what can be achieved with veneers. With large enough gaps or severe rotations of teeth braces may be advised prior to completing veneers in order to bring out the best results. Once the planning process is complete, a try-in visit may be involved where you get to see what it looks like before you commit. A third visit is required to prepare the teeth and a fourth visit for the delivery of your new smile!
I've heard about no prep veneers. Do you need to shave my teeth?
Depending on the amount of correction required and the desired result, the amount of tooth preparation varies. The heavier the color or damage of the tooth, the more preparation of the tooth is required. Regular veneers typically have the best result for the heaviest of corrections but requires the most tooth structure to be removed. These are used in cases where a complete smile redesign is desired. Minimal prep veneers require only a small amount of tooth enamel to be removed and allows for slight recontours limited to the positions of your existing teeth. No prep veneers require very little to no preparation of the tooth, with the final veneer bonded directly to the top layer of the tooth. If your main concern is to make your teeth longer, bigger, or to have your teeth more outward, then no-prep veneers are the ideal solution.
